During the London Design Festival, GraphicBirdWatching is hosting an exclusive graphic design walk through East London’s graphic design studios, celebrating the work and practices of London’s female designers. On the 23rd of September several studios of acclaimed designers working in the fields of typography, print-making, illustration, photography and film-making will open their doors, allowing a unique insight into their working environments and practices.

I fortunately got the chance to contribute to this event through my internship at Studio April, and designed the map. So if you happen to be in London on the 23rd, this is something you shouldn’t miss!

Publication in FRESH cutting edge illustration – or not?!

So I received an email a few weeks back announcing that my work was published in the FRESH cutting edge Illustration series, Volume 1 - Object. It was supposed to be the wolf-mask, but as I looked through the book and got to my page I saw that they’d mixed up the picture of my work with another one… At least they got my name right in the Index.

TYPICAL TYPE: BASKERVILLE

As the designer of the transitional antiqua Baskerville, John Baskerville first got in touch with typography when he was working as a stone cutter. A committed atheist, his mummyfied body was only buried 120 years after his death - as many priests refused to bury him. The tombstone symbolizes the beginning of the font Baskerville, as well as the end of John Baskerville himself.

Die von mir entwickelte Interpretation des traditionellen Notensystems benötigt ausschließlich Zeichen, welche in unserer Sprache vorhanden sind. Sie sind sehr gängig und daher auch in jeder Systemschrift enthalten. Dadurch entsteht die Möglichkeit Noten ohne den Gebrauch eines speziellen Schriftsatzes oder eines Programms, direkt digital niederzuschreiben, wiederzugeben und zu verbreiten.Jeder kann auf diese Weise mit wenigen Mitteln Musik notieren. Durch die Kombination des mathematischen Aspekts mit Musik, verändert sich möglicherweise die gesamte Musikerziehung. Die logische rechte und die kreative linke Gehirnhälfte würden gleichermaßen beansprucht werden und die Denkfähigkeit steigern.

This interpretation of the traditional notation only needs characters that are used in the Latin alphabeth, meaning it is available in every systemfont, allowing the user the opportunity to write, play and spread music digitally, without using a special font or programme. This combination of maths and music could change the whole system of musical education, as both brain hemispheres - the right for logic and left for creativity, would be needed equally thus increasing the users cogitation.

Dieser Entwurf für eine Ausstellungsgestaltung spielt mit dem Verhältnis von Ideal und Realität. Die beiden Komponenten zeigen sich in zwei verschiedenen gestalterischen Elementen. Die transparent überlagernde Ebene steht für die architektonischen Pläne Hitlers, welche großteils unvollendet blieben. Doch die pompöse und klare Darstellungsweise dieser Ebene hat eine düßstere, in dunklem gehaltene Grundlage. Diese Basis erinnert daran, dass all die großartigen Pläne Hitlers für Linz dennoch den Vorstellungen des Nationalsozialismus entsprechen und auch ihre Konsequenzen mit sich gezogen hätten, wie uns die Geschichte zeigt.

The concept of this exhibition’s design plays with the relation of ideal an reality. Each component presents itself in two different visual elements. The overlaying transparent layer symbolizes Hitler’s plans, which for the most part remained incomplete. However, this grand and clear display has a gloomy, dark foundation.  This basis is a reminder of all the plans of Hitler for the city of Linz, which still complies with the national-socialistic ideas, and would have brought along their consequences, as history proves.

Parks und Grünflächen sind die Erholungsgebiete im urbanen Raum. Aber wie sehen die privaten Erholungsgebiete der Stadtmenschen abseits der vorbereiteten Parkanlagen aus? Wo liegen die Unterschiede der Generationen? Ohne dies zu verallgemeinern, ließ sich auf der Reise doch beobachten, dass jüngere Menschen Parks weniger nützen als Ältere. Die Entspannung zu Hause vor dem Fernseher scheint eine gelegene Alternative für den Spaziergang zu sein. Ob diese „entspannende“ Berieselung mit dem heutigen Fernsehprogramm vertretbar und gesund für den menschlichen Verstand ist, ist jedoch fraglich. Dadurch entstand unsere Arbeit, eine Dokumentation über Erholung in der Stadt.

Parks and green areas are the recreational areas of the urban city, but how do private recreational areas of city residents, beside groomed parks, look like? Are there differences between the generations of people? Without generalizing it, we did observe that younger people do not visit parks as often as senior citizens. Relaxation at home and in-front of the television seems to be a convenient alternative to a walk. A documentation about urban relaxation.
